Arrow Found a New Network - yay! Now what?

    Hi,

Hopefully someone can assist me with this. I've a laptop, I've a copy of ZoneAlarm version:9.2.057.000 Free installed. I'm away from home using my laptop and have been using a 3G USB Modem, however, I've been advised I can use the company network, so promptly scanned for various networks and what do you know 15 of them showed up!

Zone Alarm Free immediately popped up announcing zone alarm has found a new network it then provided an ip address ie: 169.186.2.1/255.255.255.0 then showed me a drop-down saying 'Internet Zone' Apply\Cancel?

Can someone tell me or point me to somewhere that tells me: What the 'internet zone' is? If I say 'yes' and Zone Alarm enters the ip address into the 'Internet Zone' what consequences will there be for me, can whoever see my files on my computer like I can browse machines on my network at home?

obviously, if I choose the wrong network I'm concerned that someone could dump whatever they like on my laptop and so would appreciate knowing exactly what I'm risking if I join these networks?

    Thank you for your time.

or use the Forum SEARCH function to look for "New Network Found"

If that IP popped up in ZA in means it passed the OS. So it was somehow known to the OS, ZA would have not popped-up otherwise.

Check with your company or read the manual of the modem to know what to allow or not. Really impossible to give you an advise. Internet zone is for public locations (e.g. WIFI hot spots), while trusted is for location you trust (company or home network).

George, thanks for the link and the lecture.

I am interested in the 'Internet Zone' specifically, I can't see any answers to my questions in it however.

That sentence there is exactly what I was searching for, or to be more accurate I am interested in *exactly* what the limitations of the Internet zone are and in which way it operates.

I tried to give a suitable profile of usage and then apply things to it with little success. Perhaps I should say the following. If I connect and permit the IP address into the 'internet zone' then what are the consequences if any? Or is this too general? As I note there seems to be almost a 'need' to overcomplicate something needlessly in my unqualified opinion.

Yours gratefully for anything else you can add.

You find all relevant explanations in the user manual:
    http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/me...ser_manual.pdf

or simply by opening the online help in ZA. Just search and you will find plenty of information about it.

    Thanks,

    Hi Fax,

Thanks for the url\manual. Hopefully it will assist where the Programs 'Help' function failed, to me. I click on 'Help' it then asks me if I wish to connect to some url then just opens a blank page in whatever browser I've set as the default, I rapidly drew the conclusion 'that somethings wrong' So here I am

I'll see what the manual has to say and if its not good, I'll be back!

    Thanks again for your assistance.
