Default Zone Alarm blocking Sophos Updates

I am running Zone Alarm Pro and it is blocking my Sophos AV updates. I have everything that is showing up as Sophos in the program control section set to fully trusted and I still cannot get Sophos Updates without disabling Zone Alarm. What am I missing?

    Hi!

You may want to ask Sophos which key components needs access for the software to work or you reset the ZAPRO settings and start from scratch in learn mode.

1.) Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together
2.) Right click on the ZA icon near your clock
3.) Choose 'Reset' from the box that comes up
4.) Choose Yes on the Reset Settings dialog box
5.) When prompted, choose OK to restart your system
6.) Follow the on screen configuration prompts after reboot

Don't make any customisation to ZA after the reset... keep the defaults. Now run sophos and let it update.

    Cheers,
    Fax
P.S. Does sophos software have a firewall?

    Fax,
Thanks, I'll give that a try. To answer your question... Yes, Sophos does have does offer firewall software. Other than that though I don't know anything about it.

That is not the product you have installed, right? I am asking this since ZA may conflict with other firewall software even if disabled.

    Fax,
No, I am not running Sophos firewall. Just their AV software.

For whatever reason ZA is still blocking updates to Sophos (even after resetting). I have posted on the Sophos forum. But if anybody has any ideas, I would love to hear them. Having to take down ZA to get AV updates is a real pain.

    Thanks,

Weird... it must be a serious corruption of ZA.

    First try: soft
Inspect the ZA log section to find if there is any trace of the block in the firewall, OS firewall and program sections.

Second try before contacting official ZA technical support (link in my signature). Full removal and reinstall.

You don't mention the OS so I will assume is XP

First remove ZA with the ZA removal tool (download on desktop and run as administrator):
    http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...cpes_clean.exe

Double check that all ZA related files/folders are gone:

    1.) Restart your computer
2.) When you see the screen go black and it starts booting back up keep
tapping the "F8" key (at the top of your keyboard)
3.) This should bring up a menu. Choose Safe Mode off the menu by
using the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press
    Enter
4.) If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you
get a help and support window, close this.
5.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
6.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs --> ZoneAlarm folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as
    possible.

    7.) Close this window
    8.) Click Start, My Computer
    9.) Double Click the C:
10.) Double Click the Windows Folder (It may also be WinNT)
11.) Right Click the Internet Logs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
12.) Double Click the System32 Folder
13.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs
folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as possible.
    14.) Click Start, Computer
    15.) Double Click C:
16.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
17.) Double Click the Checkpoint Folder
18.) Right click onZAForceField folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
19.) Clear your Temp Directory per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start --> Run
    - Type %temp% and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

20.) Clear the Prefetch folder per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start --> Run
    - Type Prefetch and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

    21.) Empty your recycle bin.
    22.) Restart the computer.

23.) Re-download a fresh copy of the latest version 9 installer:
    www.zonealarm.com/zapdownload/

    24. Install with default settings, do not touch or customize and try again the sophos updates.

    Fax,
Thanks for the help. I got an answer on the Sophos forums. I needed to unblock port 139.

    Thanks,

    You're welcome!
ZA does not block that port by default... proceed as suggested and if all fails start a step-by-step troubleshooting with official support.

Please let us know if and how you have solved it. It may help other users experiencing similar problems

Fax, unblocking port 139 did the trick. Not sure why it was blocked but it showed up in the log and as soon as I unblocked it Sophos AV was able to obtain updates.

Sorry the ignorance, how did you unblock port 139?
Unless you have custom rules in ZA port 139 should not be blocked.

    Thanks,
