Default Free Firewall causes serious issues

Hello there, I am getting very disillusioned with Zonealarm free. At least once a night it locks my PC in an unfortunate state. This is what happens - scenario 1 - I start up a browser (Opera, IE or Mozilla Doesn't matter which) or try to open a web document such as a pdf from a currently running browser window and the browser or pdf plugin locks up with an hourglass permanently. Attempting to close the offending windows results in 'you have chosen to end a non responsive program - send error report' Ms dialog box, however the windows will not close and the parent process cannot be killed either. When this occurs the zonealarm 'z' right click menu does not respond nor can the zonealarm program dashboard be accessed by double clicking the icon. It is then sometimes not possible to shutdown the computer without resetting it. Occasionally leaving in pending shutdown for a long time will bring up a dialog 'the program Zonealarm is not responding - end now' and ending ZA here causes the PC to shutdown immediately. Other times it is impossible to shut the computer down and it must be reset. This problem appeared the first day I installed the free version and isn't satisfactory at all. The log file shows nothing unusual -

this is the current problem where attempting to start Opera caused it to lockup in this way.

Scenario 2: opening up a new window in a currently running browser locks up the computer with the same symptoms and outcome

I have a Dell with all current updates, win XP SP3, Microsoft Security Essentials and have only had the problems since installing ZA free

    Any ideas?

I am sorry to hear you have problems with ZAfree. Please note that ZA staff does not monitor this board, we are all users here try to help each other.

I would first try to fully remove ZA (XP --> Add/remove programs) and reinstall it but without the toolbar. ZA per se should not cause issue to browsers, the toolbar per design could.

Before reinstalling ZA look for left overs in SAFE MODE and remove them as well as clean your PC

    1.) Restart your computer
2.) When you see the screen go black and it starts booting back up keep
tapping the "F8" key (at the top of your keyboard)
3.) This should bring up a menu. Choose Safe Mode off the menu by
using the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight Safe Mode and press
    Enter
4.) If you get a message asking to go to Safe Mode, choose Yes. If you
get a help and support window, close this.
5.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
6.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes

NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs --> ZoneAlarm folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as
    possible.

    7.) Close this window
    8.) Click Start, My Computer
    9.) Double Click the C:
10.) Double Click the Windows Folder (It may also be WinNT)
11.) Right Click the Internet Logs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
12.) Double Click the System32 Folder
13.) Right Click the Zone Labs Folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
NOTE: If you cannot delete the entire folder, please open the Zone Labs
folder and delete out as many of the files listed here as possible.
    14.) Click Start, Computer
    15.) Double Click C:
16.) Double Click the Program Files Folder
17.) Double Click the Checkpoint Folder
18.) Right click onZAForceField folder, click Delete, and choose Yes
19.) Clear your Temp Directory per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start --> Run
    - Type %temp% and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

20.) Clear the Prefetch folder per the instructions below.

    - Go to Start --> Run
    - Type Prefetch and click OK
    - Select all of these files and delete them

    21.) Empty your recycle bin.
    22.) Restart the computer.

23). Clean your system and registry with ccleaner.com
    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim

Install with defaults settings (apart from removing the toolbar), ensure your router/LAN (192.168.X.X) is set to TRUSTED and that ZA trusted zone is to to MEDIUM. Add your DNS and DHCP to the ZA firewall trusted zone (if not already there or if not already trusted within the LAN range). Also remember to exclude zlclient.exe and vsmon.exe from Microsoft Security Essential.

Check now (i.e. clean and not ad-hoc settings) how it goes... if you have still problems try to see if it is something to do with conflicting third party tools. Like this:

    1.) Click Start -> Run
2.) Type MSConfig in the run box and click OK
3.) Once in MSConfig, click the Startup Tab
4.) Remove the checks from everything except ZLClient
    5.) Click the Services Tab
6.) Place a check in "Hide All Microsoft Services"
7.) Now remove checks from everything other than TrueVector Internet
Monitor and ForceField (if present), and click OK.
    8.) Restart your computer

    How does it work?

NOTE: You can place your computer back into a normal startup process by
going back into msconfig and choosing the Normal Startup option on the
    General tab.

    Cheers,

Thanks for your response Fax :-)

Have used free versions of ZA in the past and have never had this particular problem. I had a paid version of MCAffe then however. I hadn't considered excluding Zonealarm from MSE... I do not and will not run registry cleaners apart from windows live onecare on my PC however I will consider your advice and do some more investigations.

    Thanks again
