Default [WORKAROUND] 9.1.007.004 - tvDebug.log file, size too big --> Turn OFF logging

    Ciao!
Today I had to delete 'tvDebug.log' because the disk became full due this file that reached the dimension of 65 Gigabyte (!!! - please don't laugh: my disk is 80 Gib). Now I am monitoring the file growth, it increases second by second, in less than three hours it becomes 250 Mib... should I begin to worry???

    Hi!

    this can be caused by:

    - ZA conflicts with applications installed
    - Old version of ZA installed
    - ZA corrupted database

Which exact version of ZA used are you using?
What else is runnign at boot?
    Which security application is installed?
Anything special happen recently? Malware infections?
You PC tend to crash or hang? Hanging at shutdown?
    Which OS are you using?

More information you provide more likely other user ere will be able to help.

Otherwise, if you are running a licensed version of ZA, you can contact, free of charge, the ZA technical support at the link in my signature.

    Thanks,

    Ciao Fax,
    many thanks for your answer!

The version of 'ZA Free Firewall' is:
    > ZoneAlarm versione di ZoneAlarm:9.1.007.004
    > Versione di TrueVector: 9.1.007.004
    > Versione del driver: 9.1.007.004

    OS is:
    > Microsoft Windows XP
    > Professional
    > Versione 2002
    > Service Pack 2
    reported also as:
    > Version 5.1
    > Build 2600
    > Service Pack 2

    Hardware is:
    > Intel
    > Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz
    > 2.99 GHz, 512 MB di RAM
    or:
    > x86 Family 15 Model 6 Stepping 5, GenuineIntel

as security and, obviously, as running at boot there is the anti virus application:
    > AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
    > Version 9.0.872
    > Virus Database Version 271.1.1/3472 (current, downloaded this morning)
    > LinkScanner Version 506 (???)

The computer was completely reinitialized about one year and a half ago after a CPU substitution.
After deleting the file (*) I ran immediately on whole computer the anti-virus (normally it runs weekly) which reported no problems at all.
There shouldn't be, as far I know, other programs running at boot, even if I noticed many (not running) programs that try (without the good manners to ask before ) to connect Internet: Google installer, Java, RealPlayer, Apple Software, etc...; I stopped definitively some of them through Zone Alarm.
No infections in the last months, no crash, no hanging, nothing of significant outside of the slowness, disappeared at file deteting.

I hope to have been exhaustive.

(*) Because the disk were completely full, I didn't restart Windows in service mode to delete the file (I was afraid that computer wouldn't restart) but I made it 'at warm' after turning off the modem and shutting down Zone Alarm.

    Best regards,
    Carmelo

P.S.: at this moment the size of the file is 734.495 KiB

    Hi!
I see you are using a localised version of ZAfree. It is also rather old, not sure there is an update (I am not following non-english version dev.).

    Two alternative solutions:

    - update to the latest english version of ZAfree (ZA 9.2.102.000) to resolve the excess of logging (a known problem in 9.1)

    - Turn OFF ZA logging in the current version. Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys together. Right click on the ZA icon near your clock
Choose 'Set debug level' from the box that comes up. Select 'Off' in the 'Debug categories' in the new window. Press the 'Ok' button. Reboot

Your XP is far too old, you need to update it with the latest SP. There are literally hundreds of bugs and vulnerabilities fixed by SP3 and all follow up updates. No firewall or security tools installed will be able to protect you if run them on an untrusted/unsupported OS.

    Cheers,
    Fax

    Ciao Fax,
    many thanks once more!

Yes, it is an Italian version (I feel more confortable with a software that speaks my own language ), unfortunately, i verified just now, it is the last version available.
Therefore, thanks to your hints, I was able to turn off debug logging: now 'tvDebug.log' is 1 KiB and it doesn't grow anymore!!!
I always avoided to update Windows (you never know what can happen) but, if there are security reasons, now I'll do it.

    I'm your debtor,
    Carmelo
