Default removing duplicate programs in program control

By duplicate I mean programs like Adobe reader (12 of them) or web updater (3) Adobe flash (6). Can I remove old versions dated before the most recent. I suspect I could remove 3 dozen programs this way, and still have one or two of each in the control list. Is there any reason I should not do this?

They are not really duplicates. They all pointing to different files or locations. Yes, you can safely remove old entries. If they are needed they will come back anyway at first use. You should not do this is you apply particular settings to each of them, by removing them you will loose any custom settings.

Thank you for a quick reply Fax. is there ever a time when users should actually clean out these entries? And, is there any reason for programs to have three trust level bars, or complete left to right check marks including the ability to send mail. Naturally the mail client would have this ability. Thanks again.

Not really, only if you don't like to see them. There is no effect on ZA or your PC. Those access rights are determined by the ZA central database of known good / known bad application. You need to ask ZA why certain programs are given certain permissions. Normally the settings are given to maximise compatibility while at the same time ensure optimal protection.

I'm a fellow user, using ZA Pro (version 9.3) and Windows XP. You asked if there is ever a need for permissions across all columns.

Be aware that granting permission in the "internet server" column is the most dangerous, and that unless a program absolutely has to have it (which is not common) it shouldn't have a checkmark. A checkmark in the "internet server" column can open ports for that program allowing access from other computers.

As for the email column, normally only your email client needs to send mail.

If you haven't read the full user guide, I would recommend that all new users do so. It is much more detailed than the Help section available through the control panel. It discusses permission levels in much more detail, and the consequences of server permissions. It is available in .PDF form at the Zonealarm website. It also discusses "trust levels" and the consequences.

I haven't tried the new Version 10 yet, so I don't know how much of this will apply to it or to other operating systems. This is strictly for what I know about version 9.3 and Win XP.

Just a word of caution. You may see the effects of a ZA custom setting only under certain specific conditions or if a program needs to act in a certain way. This means that it will not be easy to diagnose the origin of a problem and the link to ZA when it happens.

Also recent OSs are much more demanding. Windows 7 for example, needs much more freedom of connection than XP, so .. please note that what applies to XP may not apply to WIN7.

If you understand the above and you want still to try it then... happy customizing!

    Hey, FAX! Greetings!
I decided rather than possibly confuse a new user with too much information, that I would revise my original comment above, especially during this period when people are transitioning to the new product. So I shortened it quite a bit. If you need to cleanup this thread somehow, feel free to do it.

You are correct that novice users are best-served by using the Auto permissions feature, but since the poster in his follow-up question asked if there was ever any need for permissions across the entire column spectrum, I felt that some concerns should be shared about the dangers in doing that. And yes, since I use Win XP and ZAP 9.3, my comments are limited to that situation.

Thanks, and have a good day.
