Default [SOLVED] GRC Port Test Failure - Ping Reply --> router issue

    Hi

I ran a port scan using Shields Up from www.grc.com and it indicated a failure because:

Ping Reply: RECEIVED (FAILED) Your system REPLIED to our Ping (ICMP Echo) requests, making it visible on the Internet. Most personal firewalls can be configured to block, drop, and ignore such ping requests in order to better hide systems from hackers. This is highly recommended since "Ping" is among the oldest and most common methods used to locate systems prior to further exploitation.

Is there anything I need to do about this?

    I have Zone Alarm Anti-Virus

    Thanks

    Alasdair

    OS version? Exact ZA version?
Connecting via a router? Modem? Model?

Default New version of ZA anti-virus fails GRC port Scan

    Hi

I have just updated my ZA installation and a GRC port scan is below.

Is there anything I should do, or is this normal?

    Thanks

Same as above... you must provide full details of your setup. Exact version of ZA used, modem, router brand, connection type.... Most likely what you get tested is your modem/router rather than ZA. Better to check with your broadband provider.

Could you please stop posting the same messagge over and over? You do not provide information on your setup and keep posting the same question over several years.

Sorry I am confused, I have no idea how to check router settings etc. nor do I know where to post this message - it seemed to end up in another forum. I am not very technical. Is there any website where I can do a port scan of just my PC rather than the router? Thanks

Not really, it was explained to you back in 2006:
    http://forums.zonealarm.com/showthread.php?t=58213

Don't worry your router is doing its job as ZA.

If you want help on configuring the router you will need to contact your broadband/ADSL provider and ask if there are settings to apply to be stealth.

thanks - I had forgotten all about this. So long ago.

I just tried switching on Windows Firewall and switching off ZA firewall and the results are similar, though not identical (see below).

So long as this is just to do with the new broadband router that was set up for me recently, and that any risky ports on my PC are protected, I am not worried and will forget it.

    Thanks

Yes, results may vary depending on the port use at the moment of scanning...
But this does not change the main conclusion: Your router is tested not ZA.

Followup: You need to contact your ADSL provider and check if there is any better setup to apply to your router to get better results.

    Thanks,

    Thanks

From my experience ADSL service providers in the UK are utterly useless when it comes to getting technical information. You end up talking to a customer service agent who is usually even more technically illiterate than I am (!!) reading from a script and who asks you to perform a whole bunch of irrelevant checks on your PC. So I dont have much hope with this. That's after waiting hours to get through.

So long as I can trust ZA to do its job and protect my PC, I am not worried about the router or my ADSL provider.
