Thread: "vsmon" using 40-50% of the CPU all the time

Arrow "vsmon" using 40-50% of the CPU all the time

I was reasonably happy with the previous version of ZA AV/AS (93_037_000 plus auto updates), after getting fed up with Mcafee. But after I installed the new version (100_246_000) the first thing I noticed was my CPU fan revving up and staying that way. Checking with Windows (XP) task manager, I found "vsmon" using 40-50% of the CPU all the time. This is a dual core CPU, so essentially 100% of one core. As far as I could tell ZA had no reason to be using any CPU cycles at all. I wasn't accessing files to trigger on-acess checking, or doing a scan, or anything. I tried to lower the execution priority of vsmon, but it would not let me.

For now, I'm running with 93-037, and hoping it will continue to update the virus signatures for a while. If this doesn't get fixed, I'm moving to another security suite.

    Any comments welcome!

Sorry all users here, you need to troubleshoot the issue directly with ZA technical support at the link in my signature. This is the only way to report, log and eventually escalating the issue to development. Obviously you need to run the version 10 to be able to report the issue otherwise it is likely not to be resolved any time soon (if it is a ZA issue).

I found the following article in the ZA support KB, http://bit.ly/rbbA7a (ZoneAlarm is using a lot of CPU or memory resources--Posted by Ron D on 26 May 2011 08:26 PM)

I suppose I agree that I'll have to re-install V10 to pursue the problem.

They say running an active file-sharing program may increase usage. I do run Vuze nearly all the time. I will try stopping it and see if that helps any.

They offer some other tips, which I can also try. If anything works (or doesn't) I'll report here. I'll also try to communicate directly with support.

I have exactly the same problem, and I run Vuze almost contsantly.
Just closed it down and CPU went from 52% to 6%.

    Vast improvement.

    Thanks

Running applications that keep a constant internet connection open will create extra cycles to be used for ZA. Your basically constantly pushing data through ZA that it has to analyze so there will be more resources used and 50% and more is not unusual with these types of applications.

Its always been this way with ZA its just how the ZA core technology works and it nothing that can be changed or fixed because its working as designed.

Best advise don't run these kinds of apps all the time.
