We need to know the file it hangs on.

or If it does not hang on the same file each time ?

It hangs on a desktop shortcut file (.lnk) and if deleted it just hangs on another shortcut file.

Please follow the MSCONFIG suggestions as already indicated to the user that created this thread.
If there are more users with this problem it could be a malware issue or third party software used by you both. Finally you both can have issues at OS level.

    Thanks,

    Post Re: Security scan hangs

    Hi,

I appear to have solved the problem. The problem .LNK files all appeared to be one location under C:\users\desktop and not in the expected C:\user account\desktop structure - by getting rid of the files, that I can only surmise have been corrupted, the ZASS ran OK. (I had to amend the directory to show all hidden files)

However, a little surprised that these files would 'trip-up' ZASS?

Have run a number of other virus / spyware tools on my PC without a problem.

Thanks for everyone's input and help

Excellent, thank you for taking the time to report back.
In practise, the files were corrupted and caused the ZA scan to hang.

I would suggest the other users to do the same and if the issue is different I will be moving his/her post in a new thread.

Considering the issue is resolved I will modify the thread title to hint to the solution and closing it very soon.

    Thanks,

Exclamation Re: [SOLVED] Security scan hangs on .lnk files --> Removed the corrupted files

The gurus I think are on the right track.

The LNK file is corrupt or its a PC issue or hardware issue.

When AV scans it will try to resolve the .LNK file destination. If there is an issue resolving the destination it can hang.
When this happens that means there is an issue with your LNK files or your registry or the OS.

Many times utilities that are meant to cleanup or speed up your PC that touch the registry can corrupt it causing this issue.

    Its not a ZA issue.

    -------------------------------
The LNK file type is primarily associated with 'Windows' by Microsoft Corporation. A shortcut file is a pointer to an .EXE file somewhere on your system.

Sometimes .LNK files will stop working. This can be because the underlying .EXE association has been broken by something (often by some form of anti-malware program improperly changing the registry) or the association in the registry can be come corrupted.

Default Security scan hangs on .lnk files - Continued

Referring to the thread "[SOLVED] Security scan hangs on .LNK files --> Removed the corrupted files", I am wondering if it has not been declared solved prematurely.

Using ZA Extreme Security 10.1.079.000 with 32-bit Windows 7, I have the same problem: After scanning about 1700 files successfully, the scan hangs when it reaches certain desktop .lnk files. The "files scanned" counter subsequently falls to zero, but the "scan duration" counter increases indefinitely, for hours or days, or until I reboot the PC. At this point the "cancel" button does not work, so I cannot abort the scan. The other button can be toggled through the "pause" and "resume" states without any effect on the duration counter. When I allow the mouse cursor to hover over the ZA icon in the system tray, I get the message "a security scan is in progress". This "hung" scan actually prevents the PC from shutting down according to the power saving plan. I assume that it also prevents any useful/essential antivirus scans from being performed.

What I feel to be significant is that the desktop .lnk files causing this problem work just fine. They enable me to open the corresponding programs without any difficulty, so they do not appear to be corrupted and I am therefore not convinced that the problem described is not a ZA issue. I could of course delete the shortcuts, but they are most convenient for opening the large number of programs on my PC. If I delete the particular .lnk that causes the scan to hang, then on the next scan the same problem is caused by another .lnk. I have tried to delete the currently "offending" .lnk and then recreate a desktop shortcut from the corresponding list of programs in the start menu, but that does not solve the problem. The same .lnk just causes the next scan to hang.

Moving the .lnk files from C:\Users\Public\Desktop to C:\Users\User Account\Desktop or vice-versa does not appear to help.

Frankly, I do not feel like uninstalling and re-installing all the potentially "offending" programs (or re-installing Windows 7!) in the hope of solving this issue: there are too many of them. If I cannot solve the problem otherwise I think I will have to resort to using the Windows firewall and installing some other AV software, after 11 years as a ZA Pro or Extreme Security user. So any help would be greatly appreciated!

Default Zonealarm Extreme Security 10.1.079.000 Virus Scan hangs on OSK.EXE?

I have tun a clean install of Zonealarm Extreme Security 10.1.079.000 and whenever the virus scan gets to C:\windows\system32\osk.exe, the virus scan just hangs and never moves off this file to complete.

I have left the scan running for hours and it just hangs.

OSK.exe is a valid system file, on screen keyboard and cannot be removed, and has been confirmed as not infected or corrupt.

My system details are as follows.

    ZoneAlarm Extreme Security version: 10.1.079.000
ZoneAlarm license key: Please Remove your License Key so everybody can't see it
    vsmon version: 10.1.079.000
    Driver version: 10.0.217.000
    Anti-virus engine version: 8.1.8.79
Anti-virus signature DAT file version: 1085099456
    AntiSpam version: 6.3.1.4971
    ZoneAlarm Browser Security: 1.5.359.0
    ZoneAlarm ForceField Spyware Scanner: 1.5.359.0
    ZoneAlarm ForceField Anti-Phishing Database: 1.2.104.0
ZoneAlarm ForceField Spyware Sites Database: 04.155

Performing a clean install and reinstall does NOT resolve this issue, before anyone suggests this.

Any advice would be appreciated as I have not been able to run a successful virus scan in well over a week.

Default Extreme Security 10.1.079.000 Virus Scan Hangs on C:\Windows\System32\OSK.EX

I have Extreme Security 10.1.079.000 and it has not been able to get past C:\Windows\System32\OSK.EXE when virus scanning, it just hangs there indefinitely.

    My configuration information is-
    ZoneAlarm Extreme Security version: 10.1.079.000
    vsmon version: 10.1.079.000
    Driver version: 10.0.217.000
    Anti-virus engine version: 8.1.8.79
Anti-virus signature DAT file version: 1086763904
    AntiSpam version: 6.3.1.4971
    ZoneAlarm Browser Security: 1.5.359.0
    ZoneAlarm ForceField Spyware Scanner: 1.5.359.0
    ZoneAlarm ForceField Anti-Phishing Database: 1.2.104.0
ZoneAlarm ForceField Spyware Sites Database: 04.155

I have added OSK.EXE to the virus scan exception list and it still hangs, it does not allow me to add it as a trusted process, just on-access exception though.

I have not been able to complete a virus scan in over a month now, so any ideas would be appreciated. I have a ticket open with ZA support, but as yet have not heard anything back.

    Regards
    David
