Default [WORKAROUND] internet connection problem - > Remove Avast

I have been experiencing sudden internet disconnection problem, such that internet would be cut off just like that. To my surprise it turned out to be Zone Alarm, for unknown reason blocks all outgoing internet traffic. Rebooting the computer solves the problem. From my observation it could be 3 to 6 hours before it happens again after the reboot. I am not clear what triggers ZA to suddenly block all internet outgoing traffic, so any suggestion would be helpful. I am running Windows 8 Pro and ZA Free Antivirus + Firewall 11.0.000.020.

I would first try to reset the ZA settings to see if they got corrupted or are incorrect.
Go to ZA tools --> Preferences --> Reset to default --> reboot the PC.

Do not modify any settings and see if you still can replicate the issue.

It took a lot longer after restoring settings to default, probably over 12 hours, but it still happened.

Sorry no further ideas... are you using any other security tools?
This can happen if you customise ZA with incorrect settings or you are running a software that conflict with ZA.

I have a program that streams information off internet via SSL connection, when "internet" disconnection occurs, while everything else cannot access internet, this program continues to gather information without issue. Does that give any hint where the problem may be?

Nope, sorry this does not help. Most probably a conflict between ZA and whatever application you have in middle between the router/connection and ZA.

After some trial and error it appears Avast was the problem. It's not enough to just disable it, it has to be completely uninstalled to avoid the problem. I also tried just having ZA Firewall (without AV component), and the problem was the same.

Thank you for taking the time to report back. Changing the title to hint to the solution.
