See here also : Using the Selective Startup option, you can turn services and startup programs on or off individually to see if the problem occurs the next time you restart your computer.

I have found out the cause of the problem.

ZA 11 conflicts with AVG 2013 AV.

Despite having uninstalled AVG and ZA, then installed ZA 11 and went through the re-booting procedure, I re-installed AVG. I got the black screen again.

As I have paid for AVG, and am very satisfied therewith, I have reverted to ZA 10, and will await some fix to be installed in ZA 11 that will prevent this conflict.

Which AVG product do you have. They have several differnt flavors.

Also the EXACT version of AVG (no 2013 is not a version)

Did you try removing AVG and ZA. Then install AVG first then ZA?
Also did you try installing ZA frst then second AVG?

    I have AVG Anti-Virus 2013.0.2890.

I removed ZA and AVG in that order.

I installed ZA first then second AVG.

At this stage, I am fed up installing, uninstalling and restoring backups. I cannot devote any more time on this.

We have install ZA Free Firewall 11.0.000.038 on XP SP3 PC.
We then downloaded and installed AVG Anti-virus 2013.0.2890

We verified in the AVG interface that it says the Firewall component is NOT installed.

My test PC is running just fine.

Also note that testing against AVG is standard practice with our QA dept to insure we work with them before we release new software.

This could be a one off issue or the issue is particular with your PC.

How much difference is there between versions 10 and 11?

When I examined one of the ZA 11's successfully installed in another computer , there seems to be very little difference in the UI, but maybe there are minor or major improvements under the hood.

Core drivers and components have been updated. Any undisclosed vulnerability fixed. Always essential to run on the latest especially if you are on an old ZA build. Security tools evolves with malware. The GUI is the last element to judge for changes.

When dealing with security tools as first line of defense you can't permit to run old or vulnerable components. As a general recommendation better to move to something else that you can keep fully up-to-date than running an old tool.

    Thanks,

I found the following on the ZA site:

    ZoneAlarm version 11.0.000.038
    • New: Do Not Track
    • New: Facebook Privacy Scan
    • Added: Firefox 17.0.1 support
    • Improved: AV Behavioral Scanning Engine

    ZoneAlarm version 11.0.000.020

    • Improved: AV engine
    • Fixed issue: Installer screens not displayed properly on some systems

    ZoneAlarm version 11.0.000.018

    • Added: Windows 8 compatibility
    • Added: Firefox 16 support
    • Fixed: Java 7 compatibility

Since I'm using Firefox 18, and I rarely use Faceboook, and I'm sticking to XP for programme compatibility reasons (mainly my dependency on ViaVoice - I'm not happy with Dragon, and WSR in Win 7 & 8 is very patchy to say the least), it strikes me that ZA10 does everything I need.

Incidently, I have been using ZA very happily for years ( I cannot recall how many, but certainly since I first started using computers).

    I agree with Guru Fax;

"Computers are Expensive pieces of equipment. For the same reasons that you lock your home and car (to keep others out), you need to have some type of latest version of a Firewall & Antivirus protection on your computer. There is an Arms race out there between Malware producers and Antivirus software producers. and the War Escalates Hourly.

Remaining unprotected with older versions of ZoneAlarm is a sure-fire way to become collateral damage in this war with Hackers and Malware.
