Default [SOLVED] ZA update freezes PC --> conflict with a driver

I've used ZA free for eons and not had any problems with updating, but the last upadate to 11.0.000.054 caused big problems.

The update showed several "Error code 127" dialogs and on reboot the configuration stage exited prematurely. On re-boot the PC hung just before the desktop icons appeared. I had to boot into safe mode and use clean.exe to get the PC booting again. I then tried installing 11.0.000.054 on the PC as a new install, same result.

Eventually I obtained a copy of ZA free 11.0.000.018 and this installs perfectly.

I'm running a 2.6GHz twin Xeon PC with 4Gb RAM and fully patched Win XP Pro.

Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone know what may be causing it?

I'm now more than a little worried about the next update.......

These are most difficult problems to troubleshoot. If you are willing to spend time on the system then you should follow this instruction:

    https://www.zonealarm.com/forums/sho...068#post296068

Then, on a clean boot scenario (no ZA, no other software than OS, clean.exe done) try to install ZA latest build 57 (web installer here: http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en...e-download.htm )

If also this fails then I am out of suggestions

    Thanks,
    Fax
P.S. Never a good idea to stick with old versions. They may include undisclosed vulnerability. Better to move, if you can't solve the problem, to other free solutions that you keep fully up-to-date.

Thanks for that link Fax, I'll give the clean boot route a try when I have enough time spare to fix things if that fails.

    I'll post the results.

Hmm, just noticed that the v57 link is to a web install, how safe is it to have a bare O\S PC with no virus or firewall protection connected to the net long enough for an install?

Just ensure the XP firewall is turned ON and you will be perfectly fine. ZA will take care of turn it off at install.

ZA free v57 installed with fine when I followed the clean boot procedure, so it looks like it was a conflict with another service that was causing the problems.

    Thanks for the advice fax!
