Default Error 127s when reinstalling ZAFW 11 Free

See https://www.zonealarm.com/forums/sho...-slow-download for previous problem with this PC. Upgrade to Kaspersky Anti-virus 13 had failed on this PC; KAV 12 was reinstalled by booting from the KAV12 CD.

Since then I have removed Diskeeper 7 and installed Diskeeper 12 Home.

While re-installing ZA 11 Firewall Free, I got several Error 127s: 1e5ecf6, 12bdbe, and 12c01e (plus one other for which I do not have the code). After rebooting, hovering over ZA in the Notification Area shows "Initialization in progress", even after 5 minutes.

Other-than-default things I did during installation:
    • I changed install directory from D:\Program Files\CheckPoint\... to F:\Program Files\CheckPoint\...
    • I declined the two options, choosing only to install the Firewall

PC is 3 GHz Pentium 4 with 3GB of RAM. XP SP3.

Why did ZA not re-install properly?

Probably issues with your custom system set-up? Do you run multi OS boot? I have seen in the past problems for ZA to install not in default folders (i.e. not in C://).

The PC on which ZA is non-functional is called Katie. The other PC mentioned below is Josie.

Probably issues with your custom system set-up?
I always install applications to F:.

The first time ZAFW 12 Free was installed on this PC (Katie), it was installed to F:. It worked AOK (until Kaspersky recommended an update to KAV 2013).

On PC Josie, which has the same use of logical drives, also XP SP3 3 GHz 3 GB memory (but a bit older motherboard), ZAFW 12 Free installed AOK, and runs AOK.

Do you run multi OS boot?
No for both PCs, but Katie does have Microsoft Recovery Console installed.

On both PCs, C: is System logical drive (contains Ntldr, etc.), D: is Boot logical drive (contains Windows), F: is the programs logical drive.

I do wonder what the error codes mean.

When I go to download the link to Firewall in post296318, which shows on the forum as Free Firewall: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...10_000_054.exe, I am asked whether I wish to save zafwSetup_110_000_054.exe.

    So:
    • I would be downloading the current version, not the previous version.
    • Ppost 296318 says to download the previous version
    • The offered download is a slightly newer build than the one I now have on both PCs, which is build 020.

    Please clarify.

BTW On Katie, IE now has ZA stuff, despite me telling Install not to. The top of the screen in IE is now mostly black: Favorites button cannot be seen. See attached screenshot below. Sorry it is not a thumbnail.

Further, while Firefox can access the Internet, IE now can't.

This is the first time IE has been run since the abortive attempt to install ZA Firewall 11 Free.

Hours later IE is now working, but the black bar is still there, as in the screenshot.

Not sure I can follow what you have done. Not clear. So now you don't get error 127? Sorry no other suggestion from my side, too many issues on your setup to understand the problem.

Please ignore my last post. I will try to explain more clearly.

You wrote:In preparation for following post296318, I did the following:
    • I downloaded clean.exe
    • I clicked on the link for "the previous version of Free ZA" (I quote post 296318) but found that the file I would be saving is zafwSetup_110_000_054.exe. Because this is clearly not the "previous version" of Free ZA, I did not download it. (It appears to be a slightly later version of ZA.)

I stopped -- no changes were made to PC Katie. You asked:
So now you don't get error 127?
I could not have got more error 127s because I did not install the previous version of ZA FW Free. I have not installed ZA since my first post.

We normally use Firefox, not IE. When my wife ran IE on PC Katie, there was a black bar to be seen (see screenshot). Neither the Menu nor most of the buttons were visible. IE showed "Connecting .." for some minutes. (It is possible that "Connecting .." showed for some significant time because another PC was viewing a video. We have 10 Mbps service from our ISP.)

Some hours later, I tried IE on Katie myself. I found that I could connect to URLs by clicking the down arrow to the right of the URL input control. But the menu and toolbar buttons did not show -- just the black bar.

I wonder whether the changes to IE's UI were caused by the bad installation of ZA (see post 1)

    I hope this is clearer.

Sorry probably there is a misunderstanding. Latest version is build 57, previous version is build 54. Your is older. Please proceed with the full remove of your version and install build 54 as originally suggested. Please follow closely ALL the steps suggested.

Please note that ZA build 20, 54, 57 toolbar only support certain versions of firefox. If you work only with firefox you can choose not to install the toolbar when running the build 54 installer.

    Thanks,
    Fax

I now have a real problem on PC Katie: no connection to the router: ping 192.168.0.1 says "Destination host unreachable", plus Kaspersky Anti-virus 2012 (KAV) says "Protection components: failure".

    Here is the step-by-step:

    • In Add/Remove programs, I removed ZoneAlarm.
    • I clicked Restart. PC restarted OK
    • In Add/Remove Programs, I looked for ZoneAlarm toolbar and Do Not Track. Neither of them were there.
    • For good measure, I exited the resident portion of Spybot Search and Destroy
    • I ran your clean.exe, which I had downloaded earlier.
    • When it asked "Are you sure that you want to uninstall ZoneAlarm from this computer?", I clicked on Yes.
    • Clean completed. I clicked on Restart. PC restarted OK.
    • I have P2 Settime.exe running at start-up (as I have for many years.). It told me that I had no connectivity with my usual time server. Ping showed that the PC had no connectivity with the router.
    • I copied zafwSetup_110_000_054.exe from PC Josie (where I had downloaded it to) on to a USB stick, and ran it from there.
    • I declined all 3 options: ZA as home page, ZA toolbar, and ZA as default search.
    • I accepted Auto-learn
    • I modified the install directory from D:\... to F:\...
    • Installer showed "Installing"
    • Firefox opened and said "Server not found"
    • I unchecked "Inform me ..."
    • I accepted to Restart
    • KAV 2012 said "could not enable some components"
    • ZA asked about Settime.exe accessing the Internet". I clicked on Allow.
    • ZA asked "Diskeeper Optimization Service is trying to open raw disk device". I clicked on Allow. (This is Diskeeper 12 Home).
    • ZA asked "KAV is trying to open raw disk device". I clicked on Allow.
    • ZA asked "NVIDEA Driver Helper Service is trying to launch D:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe, or use another program to gain access to privileged resources". I clicked on Allow.
    • ZA asked "OCR Aware (32-bit) is attempting to monitor activity on this computer". I clicked on Allow. (This is part of Canon scanner software).
    • ZA asked "PowerDesk Dialog Helper is attempting to launch D:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe ...". I clicked on Allow.
    • ZA asked "KAV is trying to access the Internet". I clicked on Allow.
    • Hovering over the ZA icon in the Notification Area showed "Your computer is protected".
    • Windows Security Center showed Firewall On and KAV Off.
    • Start | Programs | KAV showed "Protection components: failure"
    • ping said "Destination host unreachable".
    • In ZA, I moused Firewall Details | Basic Firewall | View Zones. The list was empty.
    • Based on PC Josie, I added to the Trusted Zone: 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 Network LAN and 192.168.0.1 IP Address.
    • For good measure, I restarted the router and PC Katie.
    • ping said "Destination host unreachable".

What do you suggest to get connectivity back?

I have temporarily set PC Josie to receive all email.

I told you that PC Katie does not have multi-boot. I have discovered that it does multi-boot, between XP and MSDOS. Because the choice screen only shows for a second, I had not seen it before. The PC is never booted to MSDOS. It was put there for convenience in checking out keyboards.

    Sorry.

I now know why I thought that "previous version" meant ZA 10. The link in post 296318 shows as " ... 10_000_054". I took this as version 10. I now realize that your major version numbers are 3 digits, e.g. 110.
