Default Must set public zone to Med to use internet after malware infection

    Hi,

I'm using Win8 Home Premium, wireless, ZA:

ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus + Firewall version: 11.0.000.057
    Vsmon version: 11.0.000.057
    Driver version: 11.0.000.026
    Antivirus engine version: 8.3.0.13
Antivirus signature DAT file version: 1118015840
    Web Identity Protections version: 1.5.393.22

All traffic are blocked but ZA can update itself, I found I have to set PZ to Med to use internet.

Before this drama ZA killed some malware or the like.

So I did a full scan and after a while ZA said it need "advanced disinfection" recommend close all other apps, I did as told and OS restarted by ZA.

FYI a "desktop.ini" in \system32 (?)was infected need reboot to rectify.

After reload I found the wireless has local connection but no internet access. However I can manually update ZA and other wireless devices work properly with internet.

So I disable ZA firewall and all traffic are back then I enable ZA and set PZ to Med also good.

Please let me know what other settings can help and what further info/log you need, thanks.

Probably the malware has broken some system files. I would recommend you check your system following ALL steps as detailed here:

    Malware Clean-up Guidance

To exclude problems with ZA corruption remove the current ZA from WIN8 "Unistall a program". Run also the ZA removal tool to be sure no left overs are in the PC. Here: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...load/clean.exe

    Reboot the PC

Install the latest ZA build you can find here:
    Looking for the latest version?
(mind to choose the right file!)

See if now things are working better otherwise you may need to reinstall WIN8 and depending on the type of infection it would be better to fully format the PC before reinstalling win8.

I revised the title to better hint to the problem.

    Thanks,
    Fax

    thank you guys.

However I'm confused neither the FW or AV has a scan mode to set, whenever I click full scan it simply starts to scan.

According to your instruction in other thread it should set the scan mode then reboot with safe+network, then run a full scan etc right?

George by looking up your attached pic I found the "tune up" in my ZA is greyed out why was that?

Yes, go on... do a full scan in safe mode with networking. Don't follow to the letter the instruction as depending on the version used instruction may differ slightly.

Hmmm.. if the "Tune-Up" option in the upper right corner is grayed out, then it may not have been installed before or may be blocked by other software?

1.) normally if never installed before and not Greyed out, the first time you click on Tune-up, it will be installed and Activated.

you may have to RESET you Default Setting,
Click on "FIREWALL" / Advanced Settings / click "Reset to Default"

2.) since you have an older .057 version of ZA Free installed you may want to upgrade to the Current ver. 11.0.000.504..

    Download latest version of ZoneAlarm

Tuneup does not support windows 8, this is why is greyed out.
