Default Internet goes down after exactly one hour after starting computor

    Hi!

I have a problem with internet going down after exactly one hour. After what I understand the pc is given a temporary IP address that is valid for one hour. When you should get a new one. But that don't work anymore.
The only way to get internet access is to restart the pc again.
I have tried install ZA again and I have changed my ADSL modem.
If I shuts down ZA it works fine.
It all started after my internet provider upgraded the software in my modem but now I have a new modem.
Any suggestions what it can be? Thanks.

I have Windows professionell XP, ADSL modem and ZA internet security suite.

Assuming your ZA is up to date (we are at version 11.0.768.000) and ZA databases are not corrupted then there are several steps to perform to fix the issue you are reporting including adding DNS and DHCP IPs to the trusted zone.

**Note: ZA Trusted zone MUST be set to MEDIUM and not high.

Most troubleshooting steps are included in the ZA online help you can access from your ZA interface.

Thanks! I have fixed the problem. I put my network in trusted zone with medium security. (Instead of public and high security).

    Glad you found a solution.

Setting your entire network (in the ZA firewall zones) as TRUSTED may open up your system to the internet (like you have no firewall) unless your ADSL modem does NAT or contains a mini firewall.

Much safer to check the online help as already suggested and understand which specific IP must be allowed for you not to loose your connection.

So ZA trusted zone --> MEDIUM : YES/FINE
ZA Network in ZA zones --> TRUSTED : May be a security risk!

Normally its enough to add the DNS and DHCP IPs to your ZA firewall trusted zone.

    Hi!

Now that I have put my network in trusted zone with medium security, is that a risk?
I don't understand what you mean with; So ZA trusted zone --> MEDIUM : YES/FINE
ZA Network in ZA zones --> TRUSTED : May be a security risk!
What's the difference between the two?
This is a little to advenced for me.

    Thanks,
    Magnus

I suggest you read carefully the user guide that will explain you the basics.

When your computer connects to a network, you can decide
whether to place that network in the Trusted Zone or in the Public Zone.

ZoneAlarm helps you make this decision by determining
whether a detected LAN network is public or private, secure or unsecured. It
will make a default choice for you, but opens a new network dialog for you so
you can confirm or change the choice.

    • Placing a network in the Trusted
      Zone
enables you to share files, printers, and other resources with
other computers on that network. Networks you know and trust, such as your home
or business LAN and known protected wireless networks, should go in the Trusted
      Zone.
    • Placing a network in the Public
      Zone
prevents you from sharing resources with other computers on that
network and protects you from the security risks associated with resource
sharing. Unknown networks and most wireless networks, even secured wireless
networks, should go in the Public Zone.
    http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/in...paid/64597.htm

So, if you place your network in the Trusted Zone and you network is actually facing directly the Internet then you allow the entire internet to access to your PC.

Do you have only one PC connedted to the ADSL modem? Any wireless? Which is the address (IP number) you see in the ZA zones for your network?

    Thanks,

    Hi!

I have only one computor connected to the ADSL modem (the router).
I have no wireless connected. The PC is connected to the router direct via a cable.
Take no offense but I don't know if I should print the IP address that I see in the trusted zone on a internet forum. My knowledge in the computor area is limited.

Before I have always had my zonealarm set to public (or Internet as it was called). It is strange that I can't get a new temporary IP address if ZA is set to public. It all started then the internet provider upgraded my modem, but now I have a new modem.

    Hi again,

I have changed my network to public zone again, but this time I have medium security. Thats seems to work. No problem with internet going down after one hour.

Is my PC secure with this setting? Se also my previous post there I answered your questions about my network setup.

    Thanks,

    Yes, it is safe.
your modem it's actually a router then the IP you see in the ZA firewall zones may be starting with 192.168.X.X? Or 172.16.X.X.? or 10.0.x.x? If, yes then your router does NAT then you should be OK even with the network set as trusted.

    Hi!

Does that mean that the router is the firewall in my setup and if yes what good does then ZA do?
