Default [SOLVED] Firefox and Thunderbird hang --> Update Firefox and Thunderb

I'm running Firefox 16.0.1 and Thunderbird 17.0.2 on 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 on an HP Pavilion desktop with a 2.70 GHz AMD A4-3400 APU and 4 GB RAM.

After downloading and installing ZA-free 11.0.768.000 without anti-virus (I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials) I discovered that both Firefox and Thunderbird would fail to load completely. On entering Windows Task Manager, I would find both applications in the process table. Attempting to terminate these processes manually would fail to complete. With the Firefox process, I would sometimes get a message box saying I did not have sufficient permission to complete the requested action.

Complete un-installation of ZA and re-booting returned both applications to their normal behavior.

I was wondering if anyone else had encounter this problem and how it might be resolved.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

First time I hear about this... I would first update Firefox and Thunderbird to the latest versions (23 and 17.0.8) and then trying to check again by installing ZA clean of any specific setting and on defaults.

Before installing ZA I would also run their ZA removal tool you find here:
    http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/fr...load/clean.exe

It could be also a conflict with a third party software booting at startup. You can try the following:

    1.Click Start -> Run
2.Type MSConfig in the run box and click OK
3.Once in MSConfig, click the ServiceTab
4.Place a check in "Hide All Microsoft Services"
5.Now remove checks from everything other than TrueVector Internet.Monitor and any ZoneAlarm Privacy Service, and click OK.
    6.Click the Startup Tab,
7.Order by publisher and disable all items except items from Microsoft and Checkpoint8
    .Restart your computer

Now test if the issue persist. If it doesn't go back to MSCONFIG and check back the disabled items by group of 4 or 5. Start from the service tab and then move to the startup. This way you should hopefully find the issue.

NOTE: You can place your computer back into a normal startup process by
going back into msconfig and choosing the Normal Startup option on the
    General tab.

    Hi fax!

Thanks for the suggestions. I ran the ZA removal tool and updated both Firefox and Thunderbird to the latest versions. Then I downloaded and installed ZA free firewall without anti-virus. This time, both Firefox and Thunderbird work as they should, so it seems the problem was the outdated versions. Both applications had auto-update turned on, so it seems best to check manually for the latest versions rather than to trust the auto feature.

    Thanks again for your help.
