    Default So slow on startup windows XP. about 5 minutes extra to fully boot.

    I've used Zonealarm on all my windows XP computers for years, but lately the startup is just sooooo slow. It takes about 5 minutes extra time to fully boot.

    Each day ZA downloads stuff that slows down (if not freezes) the laptop.

    I've read on this forum about possible old hyjackthis files, but I have been unable to locate any.

    Any other reason why its so slow?

    The list of reasons can be very long and non exaustive. This includes:

    - Incorrect ZA settings;
    - Corrupted ZA settings;
    - Conflicts with other software installed on the system;
    - Malware infections;
    - Damaged OS;
    - etc...

    Just browse this forum to find instruction how to clean install ZA (also using the ZA removal tool - clean.exe -) Install ZA with defaults. Use selective booting with MSCONFIG to look for third party software conflicts. Check for malware infections (see malware section on how to do that).

    A bit of patience is needed to troubleshoot the problem.

    Thanks,

    Another cause of the issues your having is XP itself as an OS.

    XP is old outdated has historically caused issues like this for SOME users and sometimes there are no fixes, besides upgrading the PC hardware and the OS to something modern and efficient, Windows 7

    If the other possibilities that FAX has given are not the issue for you then this is the only other option. XP cant keep up with the latest protection technologies, its just to overwhelming for a old and antiquated OS & hardware.

    There are no messages of any of these in ZA. Or does ZA not check on that?

    No, ZA is not intelligent enough to judge if a specific setting (e.g. blocking/restricting a specific component, IP, driver, etc...) was intentional or uninstentional

    ZA cannot know of the millions of software packages (and versions within the same software) is conflicting with its own activities.

    Not all corruptions can be identified...

    I suggest you also look to the ZA logs for anything suspicious.

    If the problem is conflict with another software package, delaying Zone Alarm loading may resolve the problem: In ZA/tools/Preferences uncheck Load ZoneAlarm Free Firewall at startup and create a new startup entry ~SNIP~

    Sorry, Your Method is not Recommended..

    "Computers are Expensive pieces of equipment. For the same reasons that you lock your home and car (to keep others out), you need to have some type of latest version of a Firewall & Antivirus protection on your computer. There is an Arms race out there between Malware producers and Antivirus software producers. and the War Escalates Hourly.

    Remaining unprotected even for the short period of time it takes to Boot up your computer and manually start ZoneAlarm is a sure-fire way to become collateral damage in this war with Hackers and Malware.

    The cost to prevent this and protect yourself is much less than the cost of replacing your computer and restoring your identity."

    I strongly Advise you to Keep "Load ZoneAlarm at Startup" checked, unless you are Uninstalling ZoneAlarm..

    Please Note: If you can't run ZA at boot up then it is Better that you find an alternatively Firewall that you can keep always active.

    On top of a bad manipulation of ZA you also disable its tampering protection.

    This way any malware can kill ZA without you even noticing it.

    No, not recommended and better to remove ZA if you cannot load it at boot.
