Thread: Ntfs permissions

    Default Ntfs permissions

    Hi all.
Being a user from several years until now of zonealarm, just recently i discovered something wich i don`t know if it`s a bug or normal behavior.
Upon installation of Za internet security my "program files" and "documents and settings" folders, have the permissions greyed out and i can only see the owner wich is administrators.
    "C:\Program Files\CheckPoint" and "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CheckPoint"
All the folders listed above have the same issue; just when i boot in safe mode i can change the permissions.

Is this normal behavior; it only happens on xp.

    Tx in advance.

    Hello;

Were you logged in as Administrator when you install Zone Alarm ?

The More information you post more likely other users here will be able to help and suggest potential remedial actions.

Right click the ZA icon near the clock --> About --> Copy to Clipboard --> Paste in a reply here. Mind to remove the license key (if applicable).

Exact version of OS used? XP SP3? Windows 7 SP? Windows 8? 8.1? Localized Language version? or English version?

Any Other security Programs running on the desktop PC? Laptop? Netbook?

    Did ZA ever worked correctly?

    Hi there.

    ZoneAlarm Security Suite version: 13.0.208.000
    Vsmon version: 13.0.208.0
    Driver version: 13.0.208.0
    Antivirus engine version: 8.3.3.9
Antivirus signature DAT file version: 1132832544
    AntiSpam version: 6.3.1.4971

    English version.

This happens only on windows xp, with 7 the issue doens`t occur.
I´ve tried in several machines, physical and virtual; always with the same outcome.

It´s not crucial, i just find it odd.

    Best regards.

Sounds like a coincidence to me. Never heard ZA been able to change all of your "programs files" folder permission or you mean only ZA folders have this change of permission?

    Hi.

What happens is this; the folder "C:\Program Files\CheckPoint" and the "C:\Program Files" are greyed out; i can only see the owner wich is administrators; all the other folders inside "C:\Program Files" are with the permissions ok; the same principle happens in "documents and settings".
In safe mode this issue doens`t occur.

I´ve checked and it only happens on xp installations, in 7 it`s all normal.

I guess this is a security measure!? For ex. malicious software won`t be able to change ZA folder permissions?

    Best regards.

Ah! OK, I understand. So, only checkpoint folder. Then most likely by design on XP, hard to say for sure as we are all users here. Only ZA development team knows if and why this is like this.

I guess you could try to contact the ZA technical support (see my signature for the link) to check, but unlikely they are aware of these details.

    Thanks,
