Default installed ZA firewall + AV, now pc takes ages to start up.

    hi

    brief pc specs
    xp
    sp3
    4gb ddr2 ram
2.5 ghz intel dual core cpu

i have installed the free ZA firewall + AV, i have the problem whereby when I restart the pc, it takes ages to start up. Probably around 2.5 mins, before was 45 secs.

All I have done is uninstalled ~snip~ another security tool and installed ZA.

Sure enough when i uninstalled ZA and reinstalled ~snip~ another security tool the pc starts up quickly again.

I have done the basics. i.e. only have ZA on start-up and true vector running in the services box.

Also I have a bizarre problem, ZA is not recognised in the add/remove programs, yet when I click on the security centre (in control panel) it shows ZA running both the firewall and anti-virus.

Can anyone help with both problems

    Hi!

sound like some conflicts with third party software installed on the system. Did the version of ZA or previous ZA+AV ever worked correctly on the system?

    Thanks,

If it was the same for all versions of ZA then its unlikely you will solve the problem anytime soon. It may linked to your specific machine.

If you want to try to troubleshoot anyway you can first check your system that everything is in order. Run sfc /scannow (must be executed from an elevated Command Prompt).

Then install ZA again and only then boot your system selectively. This wil check if you have any specific third party component that conflicts with ZA.

    This way:

1.) Click Start -> Run (on XP)
2.) Type MSConfig in the run box and click OK
    3. Once in MSCONFIG , click the ServiceTab
    4. Place a check in "Hide All Microsoft Services"
    5. Now remove checks from everything other than TrueVector Internet Monitor, ZoneAlarm Privacy Service, and any other services from Zonealarm (e.g. antitheft service, etc).
    6. Click the Startup Tab,
    7. Order by publisher and disable all items except items from Microsoft and Checkpoint.
    8. Restart your computer

Now test if the issue persist. If it doesn't go back to MSCONFIG and check back the disabled items by group of 4 or 5. Start from the service tab and then move to the startup. This may help to find the culprit.

NOTE: You can place your computer back into a normal startup process by
going back into msconfig and choosing the Normal Startup option on the
    General tab.

If this does not make any difference then there is a low level conflict with your system and ZA and you will need to find something else than ZA to use.

Is XP still supported by ZA ?
The problem sounds to me like a conflict of security programs.
Maybe a prior used program wasn't completely uninstalled.
Anyway, I can't recommend the use of XP anymore.
I would consider buying a new OS, e.g. Win 7 (quite cheap nowadays) because XP is no longer supported by MS, so it's an open gate to malware of all kind.
