    Default Microsoft Catalog Utilization Question...?

Does this service only allow "Microsoft" OS stuff to connect without bothering you, or does it allow even "trusted" third party stuff to connect?

Because I don't want to be bothered with OS notices, but I don't want ANY 3rd party program connecting without me choosing when/how.

It's not clear from the Support etc. descriptions what this actually does.

If this service allows third party stuff also, then that's a problem.
Because we have to place it on manual to fully disable that, and then for every little thing, OS stuff etc. we are being bothered (which I've disabled that before) and it drives me crazy.

So, we would need a new setting in Zone Alarm, that we can choose OS stuff to leave us alone, but for net connecting then we get to choose what does things.

Only Microsoft OS staff, no third party.

    Are you certain about that?
    Cause the descriptions say this:

    Enable Microsoft Catalog Utilization
When enabled, prevents alerts for programs that are cataloged by Windows as known and trustworthy. Enabled by default. (Depending on your settings, ZoneAlarm may still alert you about such programs if they attempt to act as a server outside your Trusted Zone.)
To me that seems to say Windows is using a Catalog service of known Trustworthy 3rd Party Programs?

If this is true, it would be nice if ZoneAlarm had a setting that Trusted ALL Windows OS stuff, and then a separate setting for 3rd Party stuff, i.e. this service if it is in fact a catalog of trusted 3rd party programs.

    Hi!
No, sorry that option is only for Microsoft components/software.

    Thanks,

The feature is called Microsoft Catalog Utilization for a reason.
    Its for Microsoft only.

If it was not we would not be specific and only call it Microsoft Utilization.
