Good question! It really depends on the day but I would say not more than few MB.

Connecting to the internet via a tethered 4G hotspot didn't make any difference, updates still stuck at 26% then aborted with an error.

I also updated to Windows 10 Creators Update this weekend, uninstalling ZoneAlarm before the update (and running clean.exe for good measure), then re-installing the latest version after the update. It still behaves the same way, with all antivirus updates erroring until around 10pm when they start working.

The 10pm thing is really strange, I can't think of anything that would change at that time to cause the problem before and not after. Previous versions of ZoneAlarm were able to get their updates successfully at any time.

Then it remains only to test another PC/laptop with your internet connection and see if you experience the same problem.
If not then it is specific to the machine as using another connection did not make any difference.

This could be an OS, or hard drive issue (bad sectors, fragmentation)while the software is working to install the update on the hard drive.

Just to be sure ZA AV bases are not corrupted on your hard drive reset ZA to factory default settings and don't change ANY settings in ZA, and also wipe AV bases)

Open ZA > Tools >> Preferences > Reset to Default
and check the box to revert av signatures to default. Then click OK.

    Reboot the PC
Wait 2-3 minutes AFTER you see your desktop load , then try to update.

    Hi, thanks for your reply.

It's running on an SSD, so bad sectors or fragmentation shouldn't be a problem. I've scanned the drive for problems and it came up clean.

I've tried resetting the database more than once (and completely reinstalling more than once) and the problem remains. It seems to be at the download stage that the update fails, although there is no problem with my internet connection and nothing else is having problems with connections, timeouts or download speeds.

Unfortunately I don't have access to another PC on which I can install ZoneAlarm and test it on this network. But as it seems I'm the only one experiencing this problem on the latest version, I do agree it must be something specific to this PC.

It also seems to be specific to this version of ZoneAlarm too, though, as the previous version worked fine on the same system. And it is working after 10pm, which is the really strange thing and made me wonder if something at the server end was affecting it.

This sounds like a Corrupted ZA Database..

    Try this:

    1.) click TOOLS
    2.) click Preferences
3.) click on "Reset to Default"
4.) in the window that opens, Check the Box to Also Reset AV Definition.
5.) Click OK and wait a few Minutes, then Reboot computer.

    6.) now Click Update Now..

Let us know if this resolved your problem..

    Regards,
I did and it worked. Thank you.

I've discovered something interesting. I mentioned in an earlier post that I'd tried a selective startup with nothing running at all except for the standard Microsoft services and ZoneAlarm itself, and that the problem still occurred. That's still the case. However, I've now found that if I boot into safe mode with networking, then run ZoneAlarm manually, updates work fine.

I'm now trying to figure out what's different between those two startup configurations that could be interfering with ZoneAlarm. It must be something I couldn't disable through msconfig, but doesn't run in safe mode.

Thank you for your progress report.
I think you got a breakthrough finding. Now the difficult part is to detect exactly which component interfere with ZA.

    Regards;
I had the same problem: Antivirus/Anti-spyware Update: Error.
My pc is a new DELL Inspiron, running the newest Win 10 Home, 64 bit, version 1703 (OS Build 15063.296). The ZoneAlarm is installed a week ago: ZoneAlarm Free antivirus + Firewall version 15.1.501.17249.
The update-error happened on every update-attempt since the install.
Then I followed GeorgeV's advice ("Preferences" - "Reset to default" described above), and after that the update process works without error!
Thanks GeorgeV for the advice - as you see from my comment your advice works also on a brand-new Win 10.
    Best wishes
